Magazine covers (the victim)

This is the first draft of the 'cinema'  magazine cover of the victim. This image is one of the victims who is in distress and is being dragged away by something unknown as all you can see is a hand with a cut on.

This is the second draft. In this one we have added more sell lines and text onto the page to make it look more like a magazine. We have included the film title as a main heading as this will be the main subject of the magazine. This film title is from the trailer and this will be used as a logo

From our audience feedback we have chosen to gone with black, red and white colour scheme including grey as well. This colour scheme is more likely to attract a male audience and give the impression it will be a horror as red is the main colour.

ANTAGONIST MAGAZINE COVER

Here is the progress of the magazine cover of our 'Cinema' magazine, featuring the antagonist of the film and and dark red, white and black colour scheme to attract the attention of horror movie fans and the male audience.

This is the first draft:

This is the second draft (I added more depth to the title, a range of shapes and more titles):

The final draft for the magazine included the final title design (that I created using the font 'Coalition' found on Dafont.com in Adobe Photoshop). We decided to use the title for all the products (the poster, magazine cover and film trailer) to make 'LockDown' have a more recognizable title as well as it being higher quality. Below is an example of the final magazine cover:

Editing

Here i am editing the magazine cover on photoshop, using special effects tools on the images and adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image, i have also used the rubber tool to erase some things.

A template of the magazine cover

This magazine cover will be of the victim and we are going to choose between the one below of the villain or a shot of the victim.
Here is an example of the layout of the magazine and the film magazines title.
I have chosen an image from Google and just used this even though the pose of the victim won't be like this, it just gives you an example of the colours and type of image.

Here is a drawing i did of what I'd like the magazine image to be like. I think by having the victim may draw in the audience and make them intrigued as they would want to find out why the victim is scared.

MOVIE POSTER DRAFT

We all wanted the poster to have the main characters and glimpse of the antagonist Zombies in. The first draft of the movie poster was the main character holding closed a door with Zombies behind it:

I also made a poster including all the 4 main characters standing looking scared in a long, dark corridor:

Image N/A

After a group discussion, we decided to combine the two pictures to have the group of main characters holding closed a door with Zombies behind it:

A template of the magazine cover

Here is one of the templates that we were looking at for the front of the magazine. The black boxes show where the tag lines of other articles may be.
The main image is of one of the zombies which would draw in our horror/ thriller audience. It would target our audience who are mainly interested in the horror/ thriller side and entice them into reading the magazine/ watching the film. It may also draw in fans of other zombie films or people who are interested in zombies to watching the movie/ reading about it.

Permission

We weren't sure whether our actors would be allowed to come into school without asking permission, so we emailed reception to ask this.

RE: Visitors
Reception

Hi Adele
Your visitors will need to sign in first thing at reception and get their visitors’ badges. You should arrange for someone to meet them and escort them round the school, and at the end of the day bring them back to reception to sign out. Many thanks

Films coming out in the summer of 2012

June 22nd
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Genre: Horror, Action, 3D, Adaption, Historical
Synopsis: Abraham fights the undead as an axe throwing highly skilled vampire killer

August 10th
Warm Bodies
   Genre: Horror, Drama
Synopsis: An existentially tormented zombie begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and fellow zombies

August 17th
Paranorman
Genre: Comedy, Adventure, Stop Motion, Animation
Synopsis: A small town comes under siege of zombies. Only Norman, a misunderstood local boy, can communicate with the dead

The best time frame to release our movie would be in mid June. This is because in August there are two movies that involve zombies so audiences may not want to see a third; even though one of them is an animation. Warm Bodies would be aimed at the same audience that our movie is so this could be tough competition. By releasing our movie in mid June it makes sure that it is one of the first movies of that genre to be shown in the summer.

Places to Film

As well as doing a film schedule, we need to organise where we will film our trailer. We all agreed that ti would be filmed in our school, seeing as some of the corridors and rooms would be perfect as sets and it is also the only large place that we were able to get permission to film in.
Here I have taken some photographs of the locations where we will film.
This could be a part of the building where we take the establishing shot, it's industrial and a little aged to make it look scary, which will suit the theme of the trailer.

The tables and chairs can easily be cleared in this room to give us filming space in a plain room, where there will be no distractions in the background (e.g. doors, posters), it's also well lit. If it is possible, the group is going to attempt to get their hands on some fake blood, which we could scatter across the walls (beforehand coating the walls in laminate or some kind of discreet paper material so that the walls don't stain).

A lot of the doors around our school have glass panels in them, which would make it easy to get shots through the glass of windows (there are 2 or 3 shots through windows in the storyboard).

There are lots of escape hatches, fire exits and locked doors around the school which would be perfect for filming the quick jump cuts of people trying to break out of the building.
This long corridor is perfect for filming the scary clips where the students are running away from the Zombies. It would also be perfect to be used in the scene where they see the first Zombie and there are jump cuts of it getting closer and closer to the people at the end of the corridor.

This looks like a modern, clean building, but a confined space. With 4-5 people crammed inside and flickering lights (Hannah said she could get a strobe light we could use). Again, this corridor would be perfect for jump cuts of the people trapped inside the building fighting off the baddies. This could also be the place where the lockdown begins.

This is definitely going to be the grotty area where the main characters see a dead body of a scientist and she gets up and begins to run at them. It looks like a large room when it is in fact a wide, plane corridor.

These stairs will be excellent for shots of people running down them with Zombles trying to grab at them through the bars / stair rails. Our school is full of stairs (116... I counted) and it won't be a problem to find plenty of dark staircases to film on.

To conclude, here's a picture of Adele.

The lock on the door is idea for the scene where one of the girl tried to break the lock on a door, she could scream 'Where's the combination?!' if we use this door.

Codes and convention of a horror magazine

Codes and Conventions of horror magazines - by Adele

  • A very basic colour scheme usually consisting of two or three colours almost always including black and white, other colours such as red and grey are also frequently used.
  • The main image is usually a close up of the protagonists or victims face showing them looking menacing and serious or in great desperation
  • Bold fonts, some usually have a scratched effect which suggests a sense of horror as it seems like something or someone has scratched at the words.
  • The names of famous actors, directors and films are all mentioned in order to attract audiences.
  • Few sell lines included as the main image is the dominant feature of the film magazine.
  • Background is very simple usually just one main colour such as black or white
  • Tag lines featured or slogans such as “he’s a cold blooded, mass murdering clown” – Empire, January 2008 issue.

Conventional music in thriller films

Silence of the lambs

The start of the trailer begins with a low rumble which is continuous throughout the trailer; it can be heard below the voices and the sound effects. This noise raises and lowers in pitch which creates tension, the high pitched note creates an eerie atmosphere and the audience become aware that something is going to happen. On top of the music there are various sound effects many which are clanging and metallic crashes. This grates on the audiences ears making them nervous. At around 33 seconds there is a series of 3 beats each are joined with a flash of an image, the audience are left wondering what the image was. When the murderer is on the screen there is an almost metallic swoosh which shows the audience that the character is someone to be feared. At 58 seconds the music starts to have a repetitive cymbal which shows the audience that something is building up; something is going to happen. The music becomes fast paced to match the action on the screen; there are more camera positions and faster changes of scenery. When the title of the film is shown at 1 minute 18 seconds the music fades out and goes to silence. This is then interrupted with a clang and then an image of the murderer’s face, because of the silence the audience’s attention is attached to the dialogue another clang then resumes the music to show the credits. Each name is accompanied with a metallic clang to bring attention to each name.
The Shining

The start of the trailer also begins with a low rumble but, on top of this is the sound of a cymbal being hit softly. Over the top of the music is a voice over of a man explaining the back story of the film, accompanied with the setting and some action of the film. At 28 seconds a high pitched ringing begins to sound as we are shown the main character turning mad. This ringing then begins to rise in volume until 33 seconds where it ends with a loud beat. It also ends when he smashes the axe into the door; the music fits with the action on the screen. The music then dies out to silence as the audience’s attention is now focused on the dialogue. After a fade to black the music then begins to fade in again, it is a low rumble sound. At around 1 minute 5 seconds the music is again rejoined by the voiceover at the beginning. At 1 minute 18 seconds the music begins to quicken in pace and is joined by a cymbal type sound. The action on the screen also matches the tempo of the music.
